The Dudley Co-op: A Haven for the Marginalized and a Catalyst for Change
The recent announcement by Harvard College to dissolve the Dudley Community has sparked a passionate response from its residents, alumni, and supporters. This decision, in my opinion, is a missed opportunity for the university to embrace the unique value that the Dudley Co-op brings to the campus ecosystem. As a current resident and an alumna, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact this community has had on my life and the lives of countless others.
What makes the Dudley Co-op so special is its ability to provide a sense of belonging and support to students who often feel marginalized or misunderstood. International students, queer and trans individuals, military veterans, and other nontraditional students have found a home away from home here. The Co-op offers a safe space where they can connect with like-minded individuals and build a community that fosters their growth and well-being. Living in the Co-op is significantly more affordable than the traditional Houses, allowing students to allocate their financial resources towards their education and personal development.
