Bitcoin Plunge Explained: The Four-Year Cycle & What It Means for Crypto Investors (2026)

The recent plunge in Bitcoin's value has sparked a debate, with a leading crypto asset manager pointing to a fascinating phenomenon. Matt Hougan, the Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise Asset Management, believes the 'four-year cycle' is the primary reason for Bitcoin's losses. This cycle, he argues, has occurred three times before in the crypto market's history.

In an interview with 'ETF Edge', Hougan emphasized that the current retracement in Bitcoin's price cannot be attributed to a single factor. He highlighted the shift in investor preferences towards other attractive investment options, such as gold and AI stocks, as a contributing factor. Additionally, Hougan mentioned the potential risks associated with quantum computing and the impact of Fed nominee Kevin Warsh's presence, stating that these factors are amplified during bear markets.

But here's where it gets controversial: Hougan suggests that the weakness in Bitcoin's price shouldn't deter the rise of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) specializing in crypto. He believes in a 'self-fulfilling prophecy' currently dominating the crypto market, where good news is slow to materialize.

"The financialization of Bitcoin doesn't change the scarcity argument. It may impact short-term trading dynamics, but the fundamental fact remains: there are only 21 million Bitcoin. All that derivative demand will eventually flow into the spot market," Hougan explained.

Bitwise Asset Management, with over $15 billion in assets under management, is heavily invested in crypto ETFs. They launched the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF on October 28, tracking the price of Solana cryptocurrency. However, the fund has seen a decline of approximately 57% since its launch, with the cryptocurrency itself down over 30% this year.

Despite these losses, Bitcoin's value tumbled below $61,000 last Thursday, marking its lowest level in approximately 16 months.

So, is the 'four-year cycle' truly to blame for Bitcoin's plunge? Or are there other underlying factors at play? What are your thoughts on the future of crypto ETFs and their potential impact on the market? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
